About Mike Sweeny
Mike started training on trombone when he was 8, played in award-winning high-school ensembles in Pennsylvania, and continued through college, when he switched over to jazz/rock guitar in order to work through school playing rock gigs in bars and fraternities.
He studied guitar with Carey Evans, Chuck Anderson, Tim Roberts, Warren Nunes and Rich Lasner, and he continues to play that instrument with "FivePointFive Jazz" and "Three B 3" at restaurants, wineries and private parties throughout Silicon Valley.
As his love for jazz grew, he also returned to trombone and Big Band music, studying the classic fundamentals with John Russell of Symphony Silicon Valley and Santa Clara University, and jazz performance at DeAnza College. He has since taken trombone master classes with Wayne Wallace, Steve Davis and others at Stanford Jazz Residency.
Sweeny currently plays with the Los Gatos / Saratoga Big Band, a community band sponsored by the Los Gatos / Saratoga Community Education and Recreation Agency. The musical focus of the band is jazz in all styles with an emphasis on swing and dance. The classics from Miller, Basie, Brown, and Goodman are among the featured songs. The band was recently featured at the San Jose Jazz Festival.
In addition to playing with LGS Big Band, Sweeny plays third chair for the SF Bay Jazz Band (previously under direction of Charles Hamilton, conductor of the famed Berkeley High Big Band) and toured Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou China with that group in the summer of 2004. He continues with the SFBB under the direction of the talented Jeff Sanford, with gigs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Jazz Combo
Three B 3 The Three B 3 combo brings a distinctive jazz-funk rhythm to favorites from American songbook standards to rock classics. Paco Leon on the B3 Hammond organ joins guitarist Mike Sweeny and drummer Jack Kerns to keep the mood upbeat, and the energy moving. This Bay Area favorite can regularly be found performing at restaurants, cafes and private parties throughout the Bay Area.
